A Safe way to Practise Sparring

January 19, 2013 by sneakpunch Leave a Comment

When training my clients, I like to introduce technical sparring into the sessions. This involves one boxer being nominated the “jabber” he will be the instigator. The other boxer will be the “defender” he can only hit to the head as a counter from the “jabbers” jab – Both can hit to the body at anytime. I use this to encourage good defensive habits – good parrying, good movement (both body and head).

Here is a little demonstration of Piam and Ian having a quick technical sparring round – Down at the Southbourne Gym.

Cornelius is such a fantastic trainer with a great insight on how to gradually push someones fitness levels every session.
I've been really surprised how in such a short period of time my strength and fitness has improved. From being someone who did hardly any exercise at all it's become the highlight of my week. Each session we mix things up to keep it from getting repetitive.I would highly recommend him as a trainer and such decent rates for being trained my an ex world champion!

This was probably one of the best lifestyle decisions I've ever made. The amount Cornelius has done for my confidence, physical ability and expanding my hobby list has been amazing to feel.

I've never been sporty, managing to somehow drop out of PE in school and later spending years dodging in and out of gym. But when I got in contact with Cornelius after nearly being involved in an altercation at a house party during my second year of university, I came into boxing and started to fall in love with the sport and with the constant feeling of progress and technical progression.

At first I thought I was coming and seeing Cornelius weekly to make me tougher; but it was instead making me better.

At very affordable prices for the skill level that Cornelius brings to the table (which gets even cheaper the more people are involved!), the understanding and encouragement he gives; and just being a nice bloke. I cannot recommend his training enough.

Dave and I have been boxing with Cornelius for approx. 5 years now and in short, we are both in agreement that our decision to start training with Cornelius was one of the most positive decisions we have made; as a lifestyle choice, the most positive.

We are both in our early 40’s but agree that we have never felt fitter and healthier. We train at 6.30 in the morning, which can be tough at times (cold winter, new born baby in house etc), but however we feel going into the session, it is the one of hour of the week where we think about nothing other than the session itself

We train hard and sparring is competitive, but never aggressive – the boxing ring is no place for direct aggression; it is about technique, skill and a good set of lungs. Cornelius will push, encourage and improve us; staying fully engaged from first to last minute. With Cornelius it really is about the more you want out of the session, the more you will get out of it.

Top fella Cornelius, the best hour of the week mate

Dave and Stu
